Love Offerings

During a time when light was quickly fading from my world as I descended deeper and deeper into a dungeon of despair, God gave me Jeneva.

She was a walking, talking gift of love. Without her to love and to receive love from her, I am not sure how much longer I would have been able to hold on to the lifeline that connected me to this world. One of the simple, yet profound, things that brought me joy was my frequent walks with Jeneva. I loved being outside (I have always viewed four walls as a confining environment for many good reasons) and feeling the freedom in the vastness of the space around us. Though I was not intimately relating to Jesus at that time, I now recognize that He was still there with me and was for me. This poem is a glimpse into that precious time and a thanksgiving offering to the Lord for such sustaining moments when I needed them most.

Love Offerings

Walking hand and hand, fingers entwined, feeling the smallness of your palm in mine,
Watching your eyes looking to and fro in search of a treasure worthy of your gaze,
Feeling the warmth of the sun’s rays as they rush forward to kiss the tops of our heads,
Laughing as the mischievous wind sneaks up and tickles our skin and ruffles our hair,
Pressing hard against our flesh, our souls move us toward our own private corner of the world.
Arriving, I disappear into a world of chocolate brown eyes, rosy cheeks and girlish giggles.
Exhaling, all my cares evaporate and rise into the sky to be carried away by the clouds.
Smiling, I bask in the pleasure of your small offerings of love - a rock, a flower, a leaf
And all is made right in my imperfect world.

A Work in Progress

Hey Everyone,

I am in the process of applying for a volunteer position with an organization called Interact. This organization provides support and services to abused and battered women and their children. Actually, this is the same organization I had to turn to many years ago when I "escaped" my first marriage and, without going into any details, trust me "escape" is the right word. My daughter and I lived in a shelter provided by Interact for 6 weeks. It is an experience we will never forget. Perhaps I will write more about that later.

Pray that I will get the position at Interact that I am going after. I am applying to be a spokesperson for them. This entails going out into the community and informing groups and organizations about the services that Interact provides and its impact on the lives they serve. Here is the website for Wake county (NC) if you want to visit it: http://www.interactofwake.org/

After researching Interact's website and reading/watching some of their Facebook posts, I was inspired to write the following poem. It is a mixture of what I actually endured, thoughts, feelings, experiences, and what I have seen others endure. I am posting 3 stages of this poem. I thought someone might like to see how I end up with some of my poems - an inside peek into a writer's world. Much of my writing comes like a direct download and I make few changes, but some writing I ponder and change a lot to find just the right feel. I would be curious to hear from you what you think about the process and which version of this poem spoke to you the most.

Blessings!
Carol

The Answer Revealed

Broken bones and battered flesh
Pain running through my veins
Fear inhabiting my every thought
A walking prisoner in a free world
Where do I go from here?

Stretching forth my hand for rescue
Finding nothingness for my effort
Trust a shadow in the recesses of my soul
Freedom a fantasy of biblical proportions
Where do I seek refuge?

Numbness slowing infiltrating my heart
Death methodically encroaching on living tissue
The light of my spirit ever losing ground
Existence melting into a pool of lost identity
Where is life to be found?

A spark of desire for something more
Pursuing the elusive gift of purpose
Yearnings for a destiny unveiled
Whisperings of potential and possibilities
Where can I be known?

Drawn out by a beautiful song of hope
Uncertainty crushed by the power of faith
Seized by love in its perfect form
Jesus, Son of Man and God
My answer revealed

My Questions Answered

I am broken bones and battered flesh
Red-hot pain courses through my veins
All consuming fear inhabits my every thought
A prisoner in a world void of meaning
Where do I go from here?

I have been taken captive by lies and circumstances
Desperately searching for a way out of this dark pit
The gravitational pull of uncertainty is too strong
Trust remains a shadow hidden in the recesses of my soul
How do I escape this place?

Numbness slowly infiltrates the chambers of my heart
Death methodically encroaches on my right to live
The light of my spirit is losing ground inch by inch
My existence is melting into a pool of lost identity
Who will save me?

Dormant desires for significance flare up within me
Fanned by the whisperings of potential and possibilities
Yearnings for a destiny fulfilled are suddenly birthed
Pursuit for the elusive understanding of purpose ensues
What now?

The song of the Master restores my empty hope
My inhibitions are crushed beneath His dancing feet
Liberation comes to me through His perfect love
My questions are answered
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus…

The Captive Set Free

Flesh battered and bruised
Veins full of red-hot pain
Thoughts infected by fear
Fighting for survival

A heart crushed by despair
A soul numbed by hopelessness
A spirit robbed of joy
An identity long forgotten

Restrained by lies and circumstances
Desperately searching for liberation
Uncertainty a constant companion
Confidence a figment of the imagination

Yet, in the heat of battle, I remember…

Dormant desires flare up
Yearnings for destiny ignite
Whisperings of possibilities erupt
Purpose looms on the horizon

The heavenly Master sings a song of deliverance
Shackles are crushed beneath His dancing feet
Escape comes through His perfect love
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus…

Scars of the Heart

I was reading chapter 20 of the Gospel of John this morning and I stopped at verses 19 and 20 to meditate on them and to appreciate them anew. These verses tell us that Jesus appeared to His disciples after His resurrection and He showed them His hands and His side. He was proving to them that it was indeed Him they were seeing, as evidenced by the crucifixion scars He still bore on His body. This passage brought back to my remembrance a poem I had written a few years ago about a different type of scar - scars of the heart.

This poem came out of a conversation I had with the Lord about past hurts. Here are some excerpts from my journal about what He spoke to me - followed by the poem this conversation inspired:

The Lord speaking to me -

"You ask me, 'What is this that runs across my heart Lord? What is this ridge, this road map of agony, of pain, of despair? Where did it come from? What do I do with it? Can it be taken away?' I, the Lord, say to you: This is your testimony. This scar inflicted upon your heart. When you look at the scar - touch it, ponder it and remember.

Remember me.

Do you remember how you got that scar? What injustice you suffered? The violence you endured? Do you remember the shame of the moment? The helplessness to stop the pain? Do you remember?

I Remember.

This is my testimony: I bear the scars on my hands, feet and my side. I bear the scar of the cross so that you might live. Your scars are heart scars. I was there when they were inflicted. I put my hand into that place of pain and I asked my Father to bring healing, to bring wholeness, to bring newness. I asked that I might carry the pain and shame of the suffering you endured that you might live.

I see your scars. I see your pain. I do more than see. I carry. I carry the scars of your heart in my heart. Why you ask? It is my testimony of love. I love. I love. I love. I love."

"Scars of the Heart"

A scar
A ridge across the heart
A hurt, a pain, a sorrow
A witness
A statement

A scar
Evidence of the past
Covered over, closed up
A memory
A thought

Ah! A greater understanding revealed
Compassion, mercy, grace
A new beginning
A fresh start

A scar
A place of remembrance
Healing, wholeness, restoration
A testimony
A story

The scar of my heart.

The cross
A thought, a memory, a story
A statement, a witness, a testimony
A new beginning, a fresh start

The scar of your heart.

The scar of my heart swallowed up by the scar of your heart
Enduring, embracing, erasing
A perfect gift
A sacrifice of love
The cross

Victim to Victor

Today I was reading the verses about Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane (Luke 22:40 : Matt 26:36-46; Mark 14:32-42) and I began to contemplate how he must have felt as he faced the ordeal of the cross that was to come. I wondered if he was so distraught because he knew for the first time in his existence, he would be alone - set apart from his earthy friends and family, separated from his Father. This got me to thinking about the times that I have felt alone. Most of these times have been when I have been a victim to someone else's ungodly will. Now, I do not in any way believe Jesus was a victim. I know that he chose his path and could have changed his mind at any time. I guess I am just trying to say that I know that Jesus can relate to how it feels to be utterly alone and subject to peoples' ungodly desires. It lead me to write the following poems (or lines, not sure they are poems). The first is how I felt as a victim and the second is how I felt, and still feel, as a victor in Christ.

"Victim"
Silent screams
Begging heart
Longing for mercy
Needing rescue
Desperate
Trapped
Terror
Pleading
Humiliation
Deep Sorrow

Released at last
Overwhelming relief
Will know better next time
New strategies imagined
Escape routes planned
Be Still - Be small
Shhhh....

"Victor"
Out of the deep darkness comes a great Light extending His hand to me.
Lifting me higher and higher until the things of my past are just

A shadow in time
A sliver of darkness
A vapor of remembrance

"I lift up my eyes to the hills—
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the LORD,
the Maker of heaven and earth."
(Psalm 121:1-2)

I will not look back for my heart is in the hands of the Keeper of Hearts.
Precious, gentle, tender care and restoration belong to Him.
I have found my resting place, my safe refuge.
I will not be moved.

Taking Risks for the Sake of Freedom

I was having some “play” time in prayer with the Lord the other day and to my surprise, he showed up in my mind’s eye on a bike. He wanted to go bike riding with me. What? Why? Of all the things we could do, why would he choose bike riding? Then I got it. He was trying to show me something. He was reminding me of the freedom I enjoyed as a child when I rode a bike - like the wind blowing in my hair, exploring places just beyond my normal boundaries, getting away from everything and everybody when things became too overwhelming. He then invited me to jump a ramp.  Whoa! Wait a minute! This was a whole different level of bike riding that I wasn’t so sure about. Remember those homemade contraptions? I do and I never once had the courage to jump one. I was perfectly content to have my feet planted on the ground.

Or was I?

Jesus said he would go first and he did – without incident mind you. He then motioned for me to go. I shook my head no. I was too afraid. I so wanted to feel the exhilaration of being off the ground, flying through the air without a care in the world, to experience something new, that appealed to me. It was the landing that put me off.

What if I wiped out? What if I got hurt? What if I failed?

The thoughts that were running through my head were suddenly replaced with another image. I began to see things as Christ saw them.  I saw myself pedaling as fast as I could, bent down low toward the handlebars, with a fierce look of determination on my face and I was headed for that ramp. I went for it with all the gusto I could muster up. I hit the board with a “whomp” and was airborne. Oh, what joy! I was smiling and taking such pleasure in the experience that I temporarily forgot that what goes up must come down. Then it happened. The bike left me. It just flew off into the wild blue yonder and there I was flying through the air.

I thought to myself, “See, I told you this wasn’t going to turn out good!”

But it did. Standing on the other side of that ramp wasn't another board, it was Jesus. He had his arms held out and “whoosh,” that is where I landed. He was laughing, not at me, but for me. How do you laugh for someone? It is sort of like clapping or cheering except it is so deep and rich that it comes out as laughter. Musical, adoring, I could kiss your whole face, laughter!

At that moment, I caught the vision.

To gain freedom, and the inexpressible joys of it, sometimes you have to take risks.

Is it scary? Yes! Is it worth it? Yes!

Now granted, there have been times in my life where I felt like I took risks for the sake of freedom and the outcome was not as smooth as this vision. I did not land in the cushy arms of Jesus. Why? I believe one reason is that the sovereign God who created us gave us a free will and free will can be used for good or evil. There are times when we are airborne and someone comes out of nowhere exercising their free will, blindsides us and knocks us to the ground - hard. Sometimes, in exercising our own free will, we make tactical errors or use poor judgment and that gets us off course and we miss the target - can you say "crash and burn?" I can. Been there done that a few times. The fact of the matter is that neither of these scenarios changes the truth:

Jesus is still there. He is the constant factor that does not change.

If we land in His arms, he rejoices with us. If we land on our faces, no matter the cause, He picks us up, brushes us off, and tends to our injuries. In both cases, from my experience, He says,

“Go ahead, give it another try. I will be right here."

Now that's freedom!

Journey of my Soul

In the womb, I was given a gift. It is called a soul. It was placed inside me with great care and it was full of seeds of promise. When I was born, my soul entered a realm of possibilities. As I grew, my soul expanded and potential stretched and reached out to the world around me.

Promises. Possibilities. Potential.

Open to receive. Open to embrace.

Slap! Smack! Whack!

Went the world around me.

Retreat!

Confused. Cautious. Unsure.

Long suffering. Perseverance.

The long suffering of my soul carried me through time and space and placed me at the feet of Jesus. The Maker of my soul introduced me to the Keeper of my soul. His presence was made known to me. His whispers called to me, coaxing and urging me out of darkness and into the light to try again. He spoke, the Lover of my soul, the language of my soul...

"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you." (Deut. 31:6 NIV)

For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
(Jer. 29:11 NIV)

"Behold, the former things have come to pass, Now I declare new things; Before they spring forth I proclaim them to you."
(Isa. 42:9 NASB)

Patience.

Promises, possibilities, potential, perseverance, patience.

The Power of Words

Words

They fascinate me!

The search for just the right words to articulate my thoughts can be satisfying at times and frustrating at others. For me, words are the building blocks, or DNA, of expression. How I choose and order the words on the inside of me, will determine what my outward expression will look like.

Expression - as in bringing into the light, illuminating, that which is unseen - making something known.

The thing is that I don't just desire to make words known. I desire to make myself known through words. I desire people to know what is in my heart. My heart is the nucleus, the core, the creation place of my thoughts, beliefs and opinions. It is where my purposes and intentions are birthed.

This trail of thinking brought me to a particular set of verses:

"In the beginning [before all time] was the Word (Christ), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God Himself. He was present originally with God. All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him was not even one thing made that has come into being." John 1:1-3 (Amplified Bible)

Jesus was called "the Word." Jesus (Christ) is the core expression of who God is and he, "the Word," brought every thing that was in God's heart into being. All God's desires and intentions were birthed out of His heart and illuminated through His Son, the Word, to the world.

Words come in the form of a divine person. They come from human beings as well. There is something unique and powerful about words and the instrument that speaks them forth and it is this:

"Death and life are in the power of the tongue..."
Proverbs 18:21(a) (NASB)

I close with this prayer:

"Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart
be pleasing in your sight,
O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer."
Psalm 19:14 (NIV)

May the Spirit of the Lord continuously cleanse my heart so that what is expressed from this unseen place is more and more the life and love of God.

 Amen.

In Search of a Gift

In this "great awakening" season of my life, I have made yet another wonderful discovery.

I love a story!

I recently went on an excursion, a treasure hunt! Granted, it was in my mind, but it was a hunt none the less. What kind of treasure was I looking for?

A Gift

Not a present with a pretty bow on it, but gift as in

Giftedness

I took my mental voyage all the way back to my childhood (waaaay back) to see if I could recognize a giftedness that had always been there, but had never been cultivated, that had been lying dormant due to lack of something - resources, encouragement, circumstances, etc.

Was I an artist, a musician, an actor in the making who just never caught a break?

I searched and searched my memories. I liked music. Did I have a hidden musical gift? I liked writing poetry. Was I a poet and just didn't know it (alright - old joke). Reading was high on my list. Not sure there is a gift of reading. Day dreaming was seriously one of my favorite past times. It felt like a gift. These were nice memories, but I wanted treasure! I kept pondering things on my own and then I finally "got a clue" and petitioned God to help me find my special area of giftedness. God loves to reveal things to us....

"I will give you the treasures of darkness,
riches stored in secret places,
so that you may know that I am the LORD,
the God of Israel, who summons you by name."
Isaiah 45:3 (NIV)

He prompted me to think about what my "likes" had in common. With a little more probing on my part and prompting on God's, I got it! What He was showing me was that all my "likes" were ways of telling a story.

Songs tell a story. Books tell stories. Poetry. Story. Day dreaming. Best kind of story.

Once I had a dream that I was having a conversation with God. Do you know what was the only thing I remembered about that conversation when I woke up?

God likes fairy tales!

Apparently, if my dream conversation is valid -

God loves a story too!

The gospel being the greatest story ever told!

The gospel is no fairy tale, but it does have a hero. His name is Jesus and He is our rescuer and defender. He came to the earth to sweep the damsel in distress, His betrothed, off her feet and into His arms for eternity.

"I will betroth you to Me forever;
Yes, I will betroth you to Me in righteousness and in justice,
In lovingkindness and in compassion,
And I will betroth you to me in faithfulness."
Hosea 2:19-20(NASB)

Thank you God for writing your story on the tablet of my heart.

Back to the search for my gift(s)...

Is the love of a story a gift? Not necessarily, but the knowledge that my love of a story is a fundamental part of who I am is a present

My treasure hunt continues....

The Image of Jesus

God took me through something this week that was not comfortable and, actually, was quite painful. My kind, loving and gracious Father allowed me to be broken so that He could do some mending of a supernatural nature regarding a relationship and a way of thinking.

The relationship mending aspect of what took place is precious to me and I will keep that private. Here is the "way of thinking" that challenged me and I want to put out there for examination:

*We all have our own image of Jesus, how we visualize, imagine, see Him in our minds, and then we judge others' Christ-likeness according to how well they fit that image.

This got me thinking (there is that contemplation side of me) about my image of Jesus. What is my image of Him?

I see Jesus as a bold, passionate, radical lover of mankind.

Where did this image come from? (more contemplating)

From the inside out.

At least that is my desire. That is my hope. The image of Christ and the expression of Christ being worked into me and out of me by the power of the indwelling Spirit of God - His Holy Spirit -

The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. 1 Cor. 2:10(b)-12

the one who knows the Father Intimately and fully.

How can I know if my image is accurate and truthful? What is the standard by which I measure truth?

The WORD of GOD

not the world
not an institution
not a person

Father God has assured me of this...

And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. 2 Cor. 3:18 (ESV)

Through His Spirit and by His Word I can know the image of His Son and I can know that as a child of God I am being made like Him.

"And I - in righteousness I will see your face; when I awake, I will be satisfied with seeing your likeness
Psalm 17-15 (NIV)

Amen.

(*My pastor, Gary McGhee, shared this concept with me and I ran with it)
